The Caissons Go Rolling Along, 1929

Etching

Wichita Art Museum, Museum purchase, Friends of the Wichita Art Museum

1986.38

As with many of his works, within this etching Eby reflects back on his vivid memories of World War I, where he served with the United States Army in France. Rather than offering an exact transcribing of the war scenes from memory, Eby creates representations of the war through generalized feelings and sense of distress when it comes to the war.

Eby notes “The endless walking in a semi-coma with perhaps your hand on a gun barrel to keep you steady with always the danger of going to sleep on your feet and being crushed by a caisson behind.”
